Event Report: SEGi Leadership Camp 29/05/2010

SEGi Leadership Camp (SLC) was held in Pulau Jerejak Resort on 29th of May. 80 new intake students from various diploma and degree courses participated in this event.

In the morning, we left the campus and headed for jetty in 2 buses. The journey only took 20 minutes. At the jetty, students were excited to be on board.

-At the jetty-

Each ferry accommodates 50 people, and we took 2 ferries to get to the resort. We enjoyed the 15-minute trip with nice scenery and fresh morning breeze. Fishing activity could be seen as well.

-On the ferry-

Upon arrival, we were taken to the hotel function room for a short briefing by the Principal, Mr Jeffrey Goh. We were also divided into groups of ten for activities. Then each elected a group leader, and group members decided the team name.

We took group photos at the entrance of the resort. The building is surrounded by beach, with jungle in the centre of the island. The natural environment was the major reason why Pulau Jerejak was chosen as the venue of SLC.

The activity for the morning was telematch which took place at the beach just beside the resort. Some senior students, who joined previous SLC, demonstrated the activity for new students. The first game was centipede walk, followed by gorilla walk and mad bull race. The activity was fun and hilarious, especially the gorilla walk. Students used different creative ways to win the game. Points were given to each group, and a group with highest points would be announced at the end of the day.

After 2 hours of excitement and sweat under the sun, it was time for lunch. Buffet lunch was served in the resort cafe. We enjoyed the sumptuous meal. The food finished in no time.

Second activity started after the lunch break. 4 groups were taken to rock climbing. 3 levels of difficulty were available for students to choose and try. Other 4 groups engaged in suspension bridge-crossing and flying fox in the jungle at the other side of the island. The height was about 20 feet above a river.

By 5pm, everyone had completed all activities. Points were tabulated while students took a break and cleaned themselves up before dinner. Some continued activities such as swimming, table tennis, carom board and walking.

-Swimming-

Before dinner, we gathered in the function room again for presentation by club representatives. They introduced club activities in SEGi College Penang, and informed about upcoming events. Then 8 birthday boys and girls were called upon in front to blow candles and cut the birthday cake. It was a surprise to them.

Afterwards, Mr Jeffrey Goh presented certificate of participation to each student. Then it was the time everyone was waiting for -the announcement of overall champion. The first place went to a group called "Crouching Tiger". The group members won a hamper which they shared among themselves. When the presentation was over, the dinner was ready just on time. All students and staff enjoyed BBQ dinner beside the swimming pool as well as music by a live band. Right after dinner, there was fire-swallowing performance by resort staff which was amazing.

At around 8:30pm, everyone gathered at the jetty to wait for ferry. A ferry came and took half of us to Penang Island, and half an hour later, it came back to fetch the rest up.

-Way back home-

When we reached the Penang side jetty, buses were waiting for us. We got into the buses and went back to the campus, feeling tired but happy.
